Hindu Gymkhana (Code: 058) – Photo Print in Wooden Frame

$ 93$ 465

The Hindu gymkhana was opened on 5th May 1894, on a plot of land by the seashore near Marine Lines Station which was allotted for cricket pitches, a pavilion, and other sports activities. The club owes its genesis to the young cricketing enthusiasts of Elphinstone High School, who started the Hindu Cricket Club in 1878 to encourage Bombay youth to play the game. While the gymkhana played an important role in preparing cricketers in Bombay, it promoted other sports too. Tennis was first introduced in 1894, billiards in 1902, table tennis in 1907, snooker in 1943 and badminton in 1936. It was at this gymkhana that Laxmidas R. Tairsee founded the Budhwar Club, inviting prominent Indians to meet on Wednesday evenings to network and make arrangements to help in the struggle for Independence. The building caught fire in June 1963 and was rebuilt in the years that followed.
