A 1937 aerial view of the apex of Azad Maidan. In the background are seen a part of the Alexandra Docks and the warehouses of the Port Trust along the Frere Road, build across the Mody Bay to increase support services for the docks. Some warehouses were demolished in the 1990’s. For their time, the docks & their infrastructural buildings were considered state – of – the – art. The rows of buildings in front of the warehouses are part of St. George’s Hospital. At the centre are the Municipal Offices, Victoria Terminus and to the right, the General Post Office. In the foreground on Waudby Road are seen Capitol Cinema, Bharda School and the spire of St. Andrew’s & Columba’s Church which formerly stood near Crawford Market on Carnac Road.
