The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, is located near the Gateway of India at Apollo Bunder. This five-star luxury hotel was commissioned by Parsi entrepreneur and industrialist, Jamshedji Tata. Built in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style and containing 565 rooms, the hotel opened its doors in December 1903. While Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya, Ashok Kumar and DN Mirza were the Indian architects, the English engineer was WA Chambers. Khansaheb Sorabji Ruttonji Contractor was the builder. The cost of construction was a massive £250,000.
