When the Suez Canal opened in 1869, it revolutionised sea trade and made Bombay a vital port in trade. The Bombay Port Trust was formed in 1870 and 10 years later, Richard Temple, the Governor of Bombay opened Prince’s Dock in honour of the Prince of Wales. The dock had eight berths 1220 meters long and alongside depths of 6.1 to 6.4 meters. Almost 30 acres of land were excavated for the dock and the soil was used to reclaim Mody Bay (roughly Ballard Estate). It was designed by Thomas Ormiston and cost a whopping Rs 75,68,123 to build.

The excavations for the construction of the Prince’s Dock revealed a submerged petrified forest of 882 clay covered Khair (acacia catechu) trees. The find was considered evidence of a prehistoric landslide that covered a forest in the area, caused possibly by a lightning storm, since one of the fallen trees was charred down the middle. The dock is still in operation today.
