Arab Coasting Prows

Artist: Cussans, Thomas (1796 -1870) Medium: Watercolour with pen & ink. Date: 1820

Water-colour painting of  sailing ships off  the west coast of India from an album of 19 drawings (22 folios) of scenes in Mumbai (Bombay) and the south of India together with a few miscellaneous sketches made between 1817 and c.1822 by Thomas Cussans (1796-1870). Inscribed on the cover of the album is: ‘Thos Cussans Lt. Madras Artillery. Janry 1817’; and on the title page: ‘Thos Cussans, July 30th, 1817’. Cussans served in the Madras artillery in 1814, then the Horse Brigade from 1817 to 1829. He was a Lieutenant Fireworker in 1814, Lieutenant in 1818 and Captain in 1829. As from 23 January 1823 he was struck off for taking extended furlough without leave and was married 20 December 1828 at St. Peter Port, Guernsey. In later Census papers he was described as an artist.
